ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
Note - Cell phones, computers, computer monitors, televisions and other electronics contain hazardous materials such as lead, cadmium and mercury. Electronics in landfills leach toxins and contaminate soil and groundwater; incinerated ones pollute the air. Before donation or disposal, erase your hard drive appropriately to protect personal data.
Resources for disposing of electronic equipment keep evolving. The website http://dnr.metrokc.gov/swd/takeitback/ maintains updates. Generally, there are four options:
Charities. Before giving your equipment to a local charity, school or other non-profit, you must call them ahead to ensure they will accept it. Unusable units divert valuable program dollars in order to pay recycling fees.

Recyclers. Due to collection, transport, disassembly and processing costs, a fee will be charged. See the website's list, and call ahead for prices and any restrictions on materials collected.
Wait. Safely store electronics until more convenient services are available.
