Port Ludlow Trails & Natural Resources Committee Meeting

3 February 2009

Attendees: John Bonderson, Tom Satterlee, Dale Wills, Jack Manning, Marilyn Collins, Dan Darrow, Larry Nobles, Barbara Nobles, Judy Smith, Soozie Darrow, Chris Whitehurst, Stan Gustin, Dick Ullmann and Larry Scott.

The day’s agenda and the January meeting minutes were approved.

Sub-committee Reports

Finance: Larry Scott presented letters to our sponsors (PLVC, LMC, SBCA, PLA) for the signature of the appropriate committee members.

Jack Manning, treasurer, presented the 2008 accounting and the 2009 budget. No money was spent in January 2009, therefore the amount in checking remains $8061. That amount is to be held in reserve for future major projects. Jack announced his retirement and presented Tom Satterlee as his replacement. Dan Darrow moved, Larry Nobles seconded that we accept Mr. Satterlee as our treasurer. Agreed upon unanimously.

Maps: Chris Whitehurst gave the treasurer $34 which she accrued from selling some of the new trail maps to banks and realtors. The maps are now available at the Bay and Beach Clubs. The final cost for them was $564.39 for 500.  The new Timberton Loop/Niblicks Loop maps are available at the clubs as well as a new dispenser at the Niblicks trailhead by the water tower. The cost for them was approximately $380 for 500.

Natural Resources: Dick Ullmann reported that

·        His team of four will be checking the golf course bird houses 5 Feb. from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

·        an article about the Noxious Weed event 1Apr, has been submitted to the VOICE for March and April

·        Port Ludlow Chamber of Commerce did not show any interest in buying some of our Nature brochures. They would, however, appreciate us giving them 100 for newcomer packets. Dick will do this.

·        Plants and seeds have been ordered for the native plant garden at the entrance of the Interpretive Trail.

·        Dick will send a letter to PLVC stating his intent to retire from his chairmanship of Natural Resources Committee at the end of 2009.

Stewards: We would like to have a list of owners of gasoline powered chainsaws who would

be willing to help with downed trees on the trails. Volunteers please call either Doris Monti at 437-0716 or Larry Scott 437-9299.

Trail Status:

Timberton 1-12: John Bonderson reported that the Niblicks/Timberton sign near rock #9 is missing. It was suggested that the letters NL and TL be painted on the post rather than having a nice wooden sign attached.

All of the trails seem to be in good shape at this time.

Old Business:

Maintenance of the Trails kiosk: After the meeting Dale Wills volunteered to assume on this project.

Port Ludlow Days: No new information has been received regarding hikes requested.

Equestrian Use of Trails: Neither PLA or ORM have any objections to horses on the Timberton Trail.  Judy Smith attended the meeting and spoke as a representative of three horse owner properties within Port Ludlow. She requested that we give permission for them to use Timberton Loop.

After much discussion, Larry Nobles made a motion, seconded by Dan Darrow, to authorize a six month trial for equestrian use of Timberton Loop pending PLA approval of trailers using the lower parking lot. The motion was carried with one negative. Judy was asked to come to the April meeting to report on their progress.

New Business:

Larry Scott reported that he may need to be replaced as Chairman for business reasons as soon as April. After some discussion, the suggestion was made to find co-chairs for both him and Dick Ullmann so that the co-chair would learn the ropes and take over the reins.

Goals and Priorities: No changes.

Just a short historical note: Larry Nobles gave us a short synopsis of the activity on Oak Bay Rd. near Paradise Bay Rd. intersection. The gully there is apparently caving in and needs to be restructured by the county. Larry believes that this area may have originally been a wooden railway trestle that was just covered over with fill when converted to a road.

Meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m.

The next meeting will be at the Bay Club, 3 March at 9:00 a.m.
