Port Ludlow Natural Resources/Trail Committee
03 April 2007 minutes
The meeting was called to order by chair Larry Scott at 9:00 a.m.
The agenda was approved, as were the minutes of the 06 march 2007.
Sub-committee Reports
Finance: CFO Jack Manning was absent so a total financial report was not given. Mr. Scott presented information on the checking account which currently has a balance of $1070. Dan Darrow suggested that, since the PLVC treasurer Lani McCarry is leaving, our committee CFO should follow up on the requested transfer of funds from the Grant Sharpe Memorial Fund to the NRC/Trails regular account.
Maps: $2 for maps was turned in to the CFO. No other map activity noted.
Natural Resources: Thirty-three workers have signed up to participate in the Noxious Weed Day activities on 11 April from 1:00 – 4:00. Eleven sites have been identified and the dump site arranged. There will be 2 teams, each with a truck. There will be a barbeque at the Beach Club from 4:00 – 5:45.
Stewards: Head Steward Doris Monti has not heard from any of the stewards, perhaps a sign that all is well?! Dean Morgan and Larry Scott will be reviewing trail signage soon.
Trail Status
Interpretive Trail: One more sign is being made; the entrance improvement is on hold as PLA’s timetable for moving some debris for us is off schedule. We do need to act fairly soon, however, so that we can get the wildflower seeds planted in a timely manner.
Timberton: John Bonderson reported the area between signs 1-12 is very muddy, which cannot be helped, due to logging activities. The drainage ditch created by PLA near the spur is working very well. The experimental chip delivery system worked well at the spur. Chips have been laid from sign 21 down the trail.
Timberton Spur: This area is about 1/3 chipped. Motorized equipment is needed to finish due to the steepness of the area.
Around the Bay: The areas between signs 1-5 and 6-7 are being well cared for. We are exploring with PLA the possibility to put the trail along Paradise Bay Rd. up on the berm so folks don’t have to walk along the street. Julia Blakeney-Smith has been busy clearing in the 2 Bridges area but would like help clearing out nettles/brambles in the stair area, and some gravel on the hill.
Ludlow Cove/Picnic Point: We would like to have this trail form a loop so more folks would use it by having it connect to the 2 Bridges portion of the ATB trail.
Bay Club Gazebo: This trail is in good condition except for brush piles along the side which could be chipped. The trail could have an extension to go down to the water where a natural bench would be a nice addition.
Niblick’s: The beginning of this trail has again been re-routed so hikers are not in danger of being hit by errant golf balls. It will now follow the Timberton Spur and join Timberton Loop before bearing off to the left on the logging road at rock #9.
Beach: It might be possible to rearrange the cement blocks/rocks along the beach to be more stair-like and, therefore, more accessible at high tide.
Old Business:
Inventory: The Darrows volunteered to take inventory of our physical assets periodically.
Trail Descriptions: A new write-up has been provided for the Interpretive Trail. Marge Carter is willing to make changes in others if the stewards will re-write them. We would like the stewards to take the initiative on this.
Beaver Dam Trail: The Fire Dept. offered to help clear this but no definite time has been agreed upon.
New Business:
Larry Nobles announced that John Rose, from ORM, will be talking at the PLVC meeting 5 April at 3:00 at the Bay Club. His talk is about developments west of the MPR on Oak Bay Rd. and on Tala Point. Those interested in connecting trails for these areas might
question him at this time.
Priorities: #1 now is chipping the trails and #2 now is the entrance to the Interpretive Trail.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 a.m. or so. :-)
