Port Ludlow Trails/NRC Committee Meeting

3 June 2008

Attendees: Larry Scott, Dick Ullmann, Jack Manning, Soozie Darrow, Doris Monti, Stan Gustin, Dale Wills, Bobbie Collins, Barbara and Larry Nobles, and Skip Rasmussen.

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Larry Scott.

The agenda for the day was approved.

Sub-committee Reports:

Finance: Jack Manning reported our 2008 operating balance as of 31 May is $2188.79. We have not received the PLVC contribution.

Larry Scott reported that we now have an account at Hadlock Hardware and will receive a discount on some items with our non-profit status through PLVC.

Maps: Port Ludlow Yacht Club received 40 Trails maps to give to visiting boaters. 25 more maps were given to the PLVC Friday Market booth for distribution. Preparation is being done by Jack Manning and Larry Scott to have new maps made with the Niblick’s Loop and Beaver Dam included.

Natural Resources: Dick Ullmann reported that the native plant garden at the entrance to the Interpretive Trail looks very healthy. Many weed-pullers, including some members of the Garden Club, are participating in its upkeep under the leadership of Patty Patterson.

The Port Ludlow Nature Guides are being sold at the Friday Market booth.

Stewards:  Doris Monti reported that the Kehele Park and Ward’s Walk trails have been trimmed nicely by their stewards. Around the Bay 1-8 have been recently weed whacked but ABT 8 – 20 need to be weed whacked and widened.

Trails Status:

Timberton Loop – the numbered rocks and benches have been weed whacked. The logging operation should be winding down in the next two to three weeks. The Iron Mountain Mine was discussed regarding the Trails Committee showing support against the mine becoming a reality. No vote toward this end was taken.

Lower Rainier: needs chips and drainage.

Niblick’s Loop: is finished except for chipping and for an area with a drainage problem which will be done by the golf course maintenance team. PLA and the Trails Committee are planning a ceremony to officially open the trail. This is scheduled for 4 July with a hike of the 2.5 mile loop at 9:30 a.m. and an inexpensive hot dog lunch for anyone who would like to participate. Helpers are needed for this event in various categories.

Old Business: Those in attendance voted to purchase two more medium-sized weed wrenches at the cost of $310 plus shipping.

New Business: Soozie Darrow suggested that more people participate on a regular basis in removing noxious weeds from Port Ludlow. The Scot’s Broom Sweep, while successful, left many to still be removed, as well as Herb Robert and Tansy Ragwort. Bending over is great exercise!

Goals and Priorities: remain unchanged.

The meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m.

The next meeting will be 1 July, 9:00 a.m. at the Bay Club.
