Port Ludlow Natural Resources/Trails Committee
5 June, 2007 Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m. by Chairman Larry Scott at the Beach Club.
Ten members were in attendance.
The agenda for the day and the 1 May minutes were approved.
Sub-committee Reports:
Finance: CFO Jack Manning distributed an update of our accounts and account transactions. The total of our account held by PLVC is $8666.70, of which $795.64 is allocated to the Grant Sharpe Memorial Fund. Our petty cash account has $283.85.
There was no report on income from maps.
Natural Resources: NRC chairman Dick Ullmann reported that the new temporary entrance to the Interpretive Trail has been groomed and planted. A request for plant donations was in the June issue of the VOICE. No donations have, as yet, been forthcoming. Only native plants are welcome! Dick is encouraging the present plants and seeds to feel welcome with a watering program. He would really appreciate some volunteers to assist with this until the plants are established. Bobbie Collins has offered to help. More volunteers are needed.
On the bird front – no one has noticed any purple martins taking up
residence in either location of the homes we provided two years ago. If
you do see some
seen, let Dick know!
Scotch Broom still is waving its beautiful yellow flowers in some
areas.
We have
Trails acquired two weed wrenches for
the use of anyone in
the
community use. who
feels like helping eradicate this noxious plant.
Larry Scott will be happy to
have you
check one or both out for short term use to help eradicate this
noxious plant.
Stewards: Doris Monti, head steward, was not present but
reported by e-mail that
Peggy
Pegi Graham has volunteered to co-steward the Bay Club Gazebo
Trail.
Trails Status:
·
Interpretive Trail – See above for new
entrance report. Last month I happily reported no vandalism noted. However,
unearthing of wire rope at the first interpretive sign recently caused a
hazardous situation. It has been re-buried except for enough for the sign to be
relevant. The ad hoc committee for the Grant Sharpe Memorial met at the quiet
site. The committee has accepted Mike Porter’s offer to make two new benches for
the site. One bench will have a small plaque set into it with a few words which
Mrs. Sharpe has written about Grant.
set into it.
· Timberton Loop – The grass is growing tall on select parts of this trail. Larry will use a drag method to help control it. The numbers/writing on the various rocks throughout the trail have been repainted except for #10, 11 and 12 which will be done ASAP.
· 2 Bridges – The leaning alder has been removed. House construction has spoiled the Ebb Tide entrance area but we will wait until construction is done to repair any damage. The plantings at the other end of the trail need attention.
· Ward’s Walk – has been widened and weed-whacked.
· Park (Kehele) Trail – has been weed whacked.
· Rainier – The lower trail has had several volunteer crews working on it lately. Approx. 150 feet have been rooted, widened, and chipped with, of course, more to do. The spur needs to be weed-whacked.
· Bay Club Gazebo – has been partially weed-whacked. Bev Pardis and Janet Hanz intend to work on this trail in the near future.
Old Business:
· Inventory – yet to be done.
· Trail Description – need to add Beaver Dam Trail to Timberton map
·
Beaver Dam Trail – The Fire
Department personnel did a great job blazing this for us, working on their own
time, not training time as we had expected. We rewarded them with pizza and
thank yous. The trail has now been finished by our own volunteers with 2
bridges, a bench and chips. It is a really restful and beautiful spot. Thank you
Larry Scott for having this idea and following through in a timely manner.
· Two weed wrenches have been purchased, a small and a medium size. These can be checked out for Scotch Broom removal by interested parties.
New Business:
There was no new business.
Goals and Priorities:
1. Signage - There are several places where signs are needed i.e. the ABT, Montgomery Loop, Beaver Dam, Timberton Loop. Materials have been purchased and a work day will be scheduled for this project.
2. Niblick’s Loop – Needs route to be determined and flagged.
3. Rainier – The drainage area work is on hold, waiting for the rainy season to return.
Comments:
David Wayne Johnson from the Jefferson County Dept. of Community Development will be at the Beach Club on 27 June to explain the new tree cutting ordinance for “critical” areas.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m. Next meeting will be held at the Bay Club 3 July at 900 a.m. presided over by Dick Ullmann.
