Port Ludlow Trails/NRC Committee Meeting
6 November 2007
The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Chairman Larry Scott.
The agenda and amended minutes of the 2 Oct. 2007 meeting were approved.
Sub-committee Reports
Finance: CFO Jack Manning gave a very complete report of our finances, including a listing of YTD expenses. As of 31 Oct. our total balance was $8439.44. This includes $622.98 in the Grant Sharpe Memorial Fund. The Treasurer’s report was unanimously approved as written.
It was noted that we need to create a budget for 2008 before the end of 2007, including establishing a reserve fund for future major dollar projects. A preliminary list of potential projects for future consideration would be included. Jack will convene an ad hoc committee to develop and propose an FY 2008 budget for Trails/NRC.
Gene Carmody, Treasurer of PLVC, suggested that PLVC move all of our monies into one cash account. Mr.Carmody will be one of the signatories so that the account will still be under the PLVC umbrella and the statements will go to him for review. The committee unanimously approved a motion that Gene move forward on this new revised accounting for the Trail/NRC funds by taking the matter to the next PLVC workshop.
Maps: Janet Hanz turned in $5 received in the alms box at the Bay Club for trail maps. She has only 75 maps left to distribute, but both clubs have several in their inventory. The committee decided to defer reprinting, as some changes may be necessary in the near future. This expense should be included as a budget item for FY 2008. Jack Manning agreed to check with the printers in Silverdale on how changes can be made from the master copy of the map.
Natural Resources: Chairman Dick Ullmann was not in attendance. Some of the workers reported that 86 +/- native plants costing $156 were added to the Interpretive Trail garden recently. One side of the seeded wildflower garden was mowed in the name of research. We’ll all be interested to see the results of the two sides around June 2008.
Stewards: No report.
Trails Status:
Interpretive Trail: Bobbie Collins reported that she has been diligent in the upkeep of the trail. The interpretive signs are showing signs of water seepage and mossy growth under the laminate protective covers and need to be cleaned.
Grant Sharpe Memorial: Jack Manning presented a request from Mike Porter for reimbursement of $450 spent on the bench and chairs that he built for the Grant Sharpe quiet area. The Grant Sharpe ad hoc committee had previously reported that Mr. Porter was donating the bench and chairs in memory of Mr. Sharpe. After lengthy discussion, the following motion was unanimously approved:
“Approve reimbursement of expenditures up to $450 for the bench and two chairs donated by Mike Porter upon receipt by the Trails/NRC Committee of copies of receipts by no later than 31 December 2007. The Committee would then take possession of the bench and chairs and be responsible for their future maintenance.”
A letter to this effect will be sent to Mr. Porter as soon as possible.
Around the Bay Trail: Dean Morgan and Stan Gustin have installed several new signs – specifically “alternate ABT” signs at Waterhouse and Ebb Tide. Dean also has created and installed a second “Port Ludlow Trails” sign on the back of the kiosk and a “To Timberton Loop” sign in the Inner Harbor area. Soozie Darrow will paint numbers on the new posts.
It was suggested that an arrow sign be put at the junction of rock #5 on Timberton Loop as the rock is a bit off the trail. Dean Morgan will investigate and act accordingly.
Ludlow Cove: On hold due to anticipated construction.
Lower Rainier: Needs lots of chips. It would be helpful, read mandatory, to find closer access to that portion of the trail. The Greenbelt Committee is looking into this. Stan Gustin has cleared a lot of alders from around the bottom of the trail.
Bay Club Gazebo: A letter from Pegi Graham requesting help removing moss from the roof of the gazebo was discussed. It was decided to contact the Bluebills since they did some repair work on the steps to the gazebo. The gazebo is not a Trails/NRC responsibility.
Niblick’s: It was reported that there is active running water in the area that we want to cut through to finish the loop. What to do?!
Old Business: The electronic copies of the original trail descriptions will be sent to Soozie Darrow by Marge Carter.
The subject of asphalting the ABT in problem areas will be addressed by Soozie Darrow and Kathy Muir. They will contact several asphalt companies for estimates on cost for this project.
New Business: No new business.
Goals & Priorities: Niblick’s work and signage
Lower Rainier drainage
The next meeting will be at the Beach Club on 4 Dec. at 9:00
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 a.m.
